About Sun Hit Review
Sun Hit Review is a literary magazine publishing poetry, short fiction, and personal essays and articles. It was founded in Philadelphia in 2026 by writer and filmmaker Eboni Ferguson, who serves as its editor and as the sole judge of its inaugural writing contest. The magazine was inspired by her film Some Real Sugar Honey Ice Tea — made the independent way, with no permission asked — and it is built in the same spirit: a door built by a writer, for writers.
The magazine exists for one reason: good writing deserves a room where the work is the only thing being judged. Every contest entry is read blind — no names, no reputations, no favors. The winner and finalists of the inaugural contest will make up Issue 1, published in print and online in Spring 2027.
About the Editor
Eboni Ferguson is a published author and filmmaker from Philadelphia. She wrote, produced, and starred in the film Some Real Sugar Honey Ice Tea, now streaming on Prime Video, and is the author of its companion novel, Some Real Sugar Honey Ice Tea: A Philly Jawn, and of the poetry collection Urban Chronicles of the Ghetto — mandatory reading at YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School, with the novel studied at the Community College of Philadelphia, where she is also one of the featured faces of the college's new branding campaign.
She holds a bachelor's degree from Southern New Hampshire University, where she is completing an MFA in Creative Writing. Under her family's umbrella brand — Some Real Sugar Honey Ice Tea — Sun Hit Review joins her film, her books, and her tea: one house, built in Philadelphia, with the door open.
The Name
“Sun hit” is her mother Marilyn's saying, from the iced tea she used to make — she would set the tea outside and let the sun do the work: “sit it out in the sun and let the sun hit it.” It's about light finding something ordinary and making it shine. That tea named the film and the book, Some Real Sugar Honey Ice Tea — and now this magazine, which exists to do for other writers' work what the sun did for that tea.
